العلم في مواجهة الوصاية: لماذا المثلية الجنسية ليست خياراً، وأين تكمن معضلة التحريم؟

Translation

The issue of homosexuality stands as one of the areas where religious thought displays its utmost intolerance and hostility. Traditional texts classify this sexual orientation as a 'major sin' and a 'deviation from human nature' that warrants severe corporal punishments. However, when we examine reality through a scientific and psychological lens, we discover that LGBTQ+ individuals do not choose their orientation. This confronts the religious system with a profound logical and moral dilemma: If Islam is true, and since God is the creator of everything, why would He create individuals with fixed biological inclinations, only to demand they suppress them or punish them with execution?

Explanation

1. What Does Science Say About the Nature of Sexual Orientation?

In 1990, the World Health Organization (WHO) completely removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders, declaring it a natural, instinctive variation within human sexual orientations (much like heterosexuality or being left-handed).

Modern science proves that sexual orientation is shaped by three primary factors that are entirely beyond an individual's control:

Biological and Hormonal Factors During Pregnancy: Biological studies have proven that the levels of hormones (such as testosterone and estrogen) that a fetus is exposed to in the womb during critical periods of brain development play a decisive role in directing sexual orientation later in life. The brain is biologically programmed before birth.

Genetic Factors (Genetics): Research conducted on identical twins has shown a significant genetic link. If one identical twin is homosexual, the probability of the other twin being homosexual rises dramatically compared to non-identical twins. This proves that genes carry part of the code that determines orientation.

Neuroplasticity and Psychological Influences: In some cases, upbringing, the surrounding environment, or even exposure to psychological and sexual trauma in early childhood can contribute to reshaping or highlighting specific sexual orientations due to how the brain processes safety and attachment. This means that, in the end, it is a profound and complex psychological and neurological response, not a "whimsical decision" made by the person.

2. The Philosophical and Legislative Contradiction in Religious Thought

Based on the aforementioned scientific facts, the moral justification for religious prohibition collapses, revealing several logical contradictions that dismantle religious ideology from its roots:

A. The Dilemma of "Creation and Prohibition"

Religious thought claims that God shapes humans in the womb as He pleases. Therefore, when a human being is born with a genetic and hormonal makeup that gives them an inevitable, fixed homosexual orientation that they cannot change (just like being born with a specific eye color), how can supposedly absolute justice forbid them from practicing this nature? How can it demand they live in permanent suppression or face execution? This directly contradicts the concept of "Divine Justice" and proves the human authorship of a legislation that, at the time, could not comprehend the biological spectrum of humanity.

B. The Myth of "Conversion Therapy"

Some religious institutions attempt to promote what is called "conversion therapy" to force LGBTQ+ individuals to change their orientation. However, the American Psychological Association (APA) and all global medical organizations have criminalized these practices, confirming that they are unscientific, psychologically harmful, and lead to higher rates of depression and suicide, because orientation is inherent to the nature of the body and brain and cannot be erased by a decision or a prayer.

C. The Phenomenon in Nature

Religious thought claims that homosexuality is against nature. Yet, biology and zoology have documented homosexual behavior in more than 1,500 animal species (including birds, mammals, and dolphins). The spontaneous existence of this behavior in nature negates the claim that it is a "human invention or a cultural deviation," confirming instead that it is part of the natural biodiversity of coexistence.

3. Refuting the Scarecrow of "Social Harm and Depopulation"

Religious and traditional discourse consistently resorts to promoting the idea that accepting homosexuality will lead to the "extinction of humanity" or the "destruction of society and morals." This claim completely collapses in the face of factual statistics and social psychology:

Homosexuals are Not Harmful: An individual’s sexual orientation does not determine their moral or social behavior. LGBTQ+ individuals are doctors, engineers, artists, and teachers who contribute to building their societies with utmost peace and productivity. There is no scientific link between sexual orientation and criminal or harmful tendencies; harm and evil stem from deviant human behavior, not from genetic or emotional identity.

The Illusion of Threatening Human Reproduction: Historically and scientifically, non-reproducing groups (including homosexuals, individuals who choose not to have children, or those suffering from medical infertility) have made up a fixed and limited percentage of human societies throughout the ages, and have never impacted population growth. Today, the planet suffers from a population explosion and overpopulation, not the threat of extinction.

Evolutionary and Social Impact (The "Gay Uncle" Hypothesis): Evolutionary psychology suggests that the presence of non-reproducing individuals within ancient human groups represented an evolutionary advantage. These individuals contributed to caring for their relatives' children, providing resources, and protecting the tribe without increasing the population burden. This means that, historically, they were a factor of stability and support for society, not destruction.

Building Alternative Families (Adoption): In the modern era, many same-sex couples contribute to solving real social problems by adopting orphans and homeless children abandoned by traditional families, turning their parental instincts into saving human lives and ensuring a loving, safe family environment for these children.

The inclusion of such details in religious texts—whether it is the self-evident permission to eat at relatives' houses, the gratitude for the existence of donkeys and mules for riding, or the regulation of slavery laws—clearly demonstrates that we are not dealing with a cosmic constitution meant for all eras. Instead, we are looking at a local and temporal code of conduct written to organize the life of a simple, tribal society.

When modern sciences and contemporary civil laws offer solutions to humanity that include space exploration, medical advancements, artificial intelligence technologies, and human rights constitutions, these traditional texts become clear evidence that their cognitive and practical utility has entirely expired along with the historical era in which they were written.
