الصيام هو فرض ديني مشترك بين مختلف الأديان الإبراهيمية، وهو أحد العبادات التي يتم فيها الامتناع عن الطعام والشراب والجماع من طلوع الفجر حتى غروب الشمس. وقد أطلق عليه اسماء مختلفة في اللغات المختلفة، ومنها:
في العربية: الصوم، ويعني الامتناع والجفاء.
في الإنجليزية: الصيام يسمى بـ”الصوم” أيضًا، ولكن في بعض الأحيان يشار إليه باسم “الصوم المقدس”.
في الفرنسية: يسمى الصيام “jeûne” ويعني الصوم الكامل.
في الألمانية: يسمى الصيام “Fasten” ويعني الصوم الكامل أو الامتناع عن الطعام لفترة محددة.
في الإيطالية: يسمى الصيام “digiunare” ويعني الامتناع عن الطعام لفترة محددة.
في الإسبانية: يسمى الصيام “ayunar” ويعني الامتناع عن الطعام والشراب لفترة محددة.
