Translation

The Prophet, peace be upon him, married me when I was a girl of six years. We came to Medina and alighted at the dwelling of Banu al-Harith ibn Khazraj. Then I fell sick and my hair fell out until it covered my shoulders. Then I recovered. My mother, Umm Ruman, came to me while I was on a swing and there were friends with me. She called out to me, so I came to her not knowing what she wanted from me. She took my hand until she made me stand at the door of the house, while I was breathing heavily until my breathing settled. Then she took some water and wiped my face and head with it. Then she brought me into the house, and there were women from the Ansar in the house. They said: 'With goodness and blessing, and with the best of luck.' They handed me over to them, and they beautified me. Nothing startled me except the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, at midday. So she handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years old. Explanation

The Prophet, peace be upon him, did not marry a virgin except Mother of the Believers Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, and she was the most beloved of his wives to his heart. In this hadith, Mother of the Believers Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, narrates the story of her marriage to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and that the Prophet, peace be upon him, married her when she was a girl of six years old, meaning he contracted the marriage with her, and he did not consummate the marriage with her at that age. Then she fell sick, meaning she suffered an illness that caused her hair to fall out until it covered her shoulders; jumaymah is the diminutive of jum'ah, which refers to what falls on the shoulders from head hair. Her mother Umm Rumān came to her—and her name was Zaynab bint 'Amir ibn 'Awaymir, may Allah be pleased with her—while she was playing on a swing with her friends, and a swing is a type of children's toy. Her mother called to her, and Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, came to her breathing heavily, meaning breathing with heavy breaths, and breathing overcomes her from exhaustion. Nahj is the successive breathing from intense movement or exhausting effort. She wiped her head and face with water, then brought her into the house in which there were women from the Ansar, who were the women of Medina. They said: 'With goodness and blessing, and with the best of luck,' which is a supplication for happiness with the best fortune and blessing. Tair refers to fortune, whether good or bad. Then they began to comb her and beautify her. She said: 'Nothing startled me except the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, at midday,' meaning she was not taken by surprise—and this phrase is used for something unexpected that comes suddenly—except by the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, coming at midday. So she went with him, and he consummated the marriage with her, peace be upon him, and she was nine years old at that time. This occurred in Shawwal of the first year after the Hijrah, or the second year.

The hadith indicates: supplicating with goodness and blessing for each of the two spouses.

It also indicates: beautifying the bride and adorning her for her husband, and women gathering for that purpose.

It also indicates: consummating the marriage during the daytime.
